It is the first day of the year and a perfect day to discuss my reading and other resolutions for 2020. First things first, I wish you all a prosperous new year and when I say prosperous it means on all fronts; personally, professionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. We all know that resolutions don’t last long and are actually meant to be broken but I love taking up resolutions every year. It helps me to clear my mind, fix my goals and direct my energy into meaningful outcomes. In this post, I will be discussing what all targets do I have for reading and for myself in 2020.
Let us know your resolutions. Do not question yourself what if I am not able to achieve? It is totally okay. At least you will know what you want from the new year. A brownie bonus: you can always come back and check if you really fulfilled your resolutions.

So, Let’s get started!
My reading resolutions
I read approximately 35 books this which is abysmally low in front of my mammoth target of reading 100 books this year. I know 100 is a lot! But perhaps I could have done it, had I not been distracted enough. Ummm social media errrrrrrr……… But one day I had a sudden and weird realization that I consume more than I create. Let me explain. So I consume content that other people have either clicked, shot or written but I produce less content and it just motivated me to produce more, write more, create more and yes, review more.
I am planning to read around 60 books this year which is quite an achievable target I assume. Instead of focusing on the “60”, I am going to focus on reading 5 books every month, without fail. I have bought so many books in the last couple of months that I really do not need to buy more for the upcoming 4-5 months. I have finish the stuff first!
The reading challenges
Well, I have set 3 targets for myself in order to stick to my reading resolution and they are:
- Read a new author every month and know about them.
- Read books from various countries, at least one every month
- Read one non-fiction book every month
I have noticed a tendency in me that I pick one writer and keep on reading them over and over again until I exhaust all their works. If you have been following minireads for a while, you would have very well noticed how much I adore Ruskin Bond, Amitav Ghosh, Vikram Seth, etc and I keep on reading repetitively,
Fun fact: I bid farewell to 2019 by reading two books by Ruskin Bond.
To break this cycle, I plan to discover a new author every month and read their books and write about them too. Most of the books that I read are either set in India or U.S.A. or England, sometimes beyond them but not always. So I plan to read books set in different parts of the world. Coming to non-fiction, I think non-fiction teaches you a lot of things and broadens your perspective towards things that matter.
If you want a list or a reading challenge for 2020, I am mentioning here The reading woman challenge which you can follow or you can read books recommended by Barack Obama. Even better, you can be a part of my reading resolution.
Other resolutions
2019 had been quite a turbulent year. It came with a lot of disappointments, failures and confusion but it also made me stronger and gave me valuable lessons. Professionally, I strive to work harder and aspire for things in my reach. Personally, I resolve to value relationships more and invest more in them while keeping my sanity.
My priority this year is to finally start writing journal regularly. I did a 30 day journal challenge and 20 days have elapsed, I already feel a better person. Journal is such a good means to keep a track in your life. We all have limited time and unlimited ambitions in life. In chasing them, we either miss out on time or our ambitions. Keeping a journal helps to balance both and it has genuinely helped me to track the means which had been draining either my time or energy. I plan to start keeping a bullet journal this year.
I aspire to prioritize my mental well-being and peace over anything. I want to attain a good physical health and workout at least 4 times a week with some good amount of strength training and running. For travelling, I do not have particular targets but if opportunities come, I will travel to mountains.

Well, this is all that I aspire to do this year.
What are your plans this year?
Wish you a happy and prosperous new year!
Happy New Year to you as well and best wishes for a happy and successful 2020. Your resolutions are solid and I can certainly relate. As for myself, I plan to read more books this year and also want to write one of my own. I’ve been working on it for about a year and a half, going back and forth on structure and content but I now have a clear path towards getting it done. I’m glad to hear that you’re incorporating physical fitness, it is so important to our mental health and truly a way of life. Looking forward to more of your posts. And I think philosopher Will Durant said it best: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”.
I wish that you get your book completed this year and I will be happy to read and review it. Physical health is often ignored and only taken into account when things go south but it should form an elementary part of our lifestyle.
